European Parliament considering “destination Europe” label

Brussels, 16/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 15 June, Rapporteur Isabella De Monte (S&D, Italy) presented the Transport and Tourism Committee (TRAN) with her draft report on promoting tourism in Europe. Among the many proposals put forward, the MEP is considering the introduction of a “Destination Europe” label to improve the promotion of European tourism.

She did, however, recognise that “a clear definition still needed to be elaborated, as well as the potential of the Destination Europe label”. Specifications would need to be introduced to clarify the label's characteristics and modalities. The Commission had examined the idea of label but a number of national tourist organisations still find it a controversial issue and have concerns about its extra value and risks of homogenising the diversity of tourist destinations in Europe.

The report is also calling on public and private stakeholders to focus on developing quality rather than mass tourism, in an effort to ensure the stable and sustainable development of European tourism in respect of the social acquis. In this connection, it is urging the European Commission to “conclude the European charter on responsible sustainable tourism”, as well as support the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN).

The development of the shared economy, which is increasingly competing with the private sector, is also an issue raised by De Monte. She is calling on member states to adopt adapted and proportionate tax and regulatory measures. The Rapporteur also highlights the importance of the Internet and calls on the Commission to support digitalisation of the tourism sector.

The report will be put to a vote at the committee in mid-September and a plenary vote at the end of October. (Pascal Hansens)
