Strasbourg, 10/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 10 June, European Commission Vice-President for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic travelled to Serbia to discuss energy cooperation and also the climate, ahead of the UN conference in Paris in December (COP 21).
During his two-day visit, Sefcovic is expected to meet Serbia's Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, Minister for Agriculture and the Environment Snezana Bogosavljevic Boskovic, Minister for the Economy Zeljko Sertic and Minister for Energy Aleksandar Antic.
“Serbia is making progress on climate policy. Continued efforts are needed to further strengthen climate action and realise the expected co-benefits and synergies with the energy sector. These will include better health due to lower pollution, affordable energy and new jobs in climate-friendly technologies. This work will also move forward Serbia's contribution to the international climate negotiations and the EU accession process”, Sefcovic said before his visit.
A meeting with the secretariat of the treaty instituting the Energy Community and with other partners is also on Sefcovic's Serbia agenda - in particular, to discuss support for Belgrade in its implementation of the Serbian goals on energy efficiency and renewables under the treaty.
In addition, Sefcovic is due to visit the Nikola Tesla power plant in Obrenovac, the showcase project for EU-Serbia energy cooperation, and to speak at a high level conference in Belgrade on energy and the climate. (Emmanuel Hagry)
