Commissioner Vella visits Morocco

Brussels, 18/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - On 18 February the European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, visited Agadir, Morocco, to take part in the third edition of the Salon Halieutis.

The event, organised by Morocco under the high patronage of King Mohamed VI, focuses on the different economic sectors of the marine fisheries, aquaculture and seafood industries, and will attract 45,000 visitors and exhibitors from over 30 countries.

According to a press statement, Vella will also meet with the Moroccan Minister of Agriculture and Marine Fisheries, Aziz Akhannouch, to highlight the role of the EU-Morocco Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement in the sustainable development of the local fisheries sector and the wider economy. Vella will also discuss the potential for sustainable blue growth in the western Mediterranean with business leaders and will meet a range of Fisheries Ministers from other African countries to promote better ocean governance, in particular the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
