New European code against cancer

Brussels, 15/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - The new European Code against Cancer has just been published, according to an announcement made by the European Commission on Tuesday 14 October. This is the fourth edition of the Code since it was created in 1987. The code outlines twelve recommendations to enable people to take preventive measures to reduce the risks of getting cancer. Some of these recommendations are new and others have been revised in the context of the most recent advances made in the scientific arena. The main recommendations in the code are: 1) do not smoke; 2) make the home and workplace smoke-free; 3) maintain an ideal weight; 4) be physically active; 5) eat healthily; 6) limit alcohol consumption; 7) avoid too much sun; 8) avoid carcinogenic substances; 9) measure radon exposure levels in the home; 10) for women, breast feed babies and avoid hormone replacement therapy; 11); vaccinate babies against hepatitis B and young girls against the Human papillomavirus (HPV) and 12) take part in cancer prevention campaigns against bowel, breast and cervical cancer.
