29/08/2014 (Agence Europe) - Volcanic eruption. On Friday 29 August, the Icelandic authorities once again raised the level of alert to red following the option of Volcano Holuhraun, close to the famous Bardarbunga. Flights over the area at up to 1.5 km altitude have been banned, but this will have no impact on European air traffic. At the end of the day, however, the alert level was reduced to orange and the flight ban lifted. The European aviation crisis cell remained vigilant, whilst pointing out that, if there should be a volcanic eruption, Europe is better prepared than it was in 2010. Procedures have been completely overhauled, according to a source at the European Commission. The aviation crisis cell has not arranged any further meetings in the immediate future, following the one held on Sunday 24 August, but remains ready to do so in order to coordinate the activities of the aviation sector and set in place all necessary measures to minimise any impact.
