20/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - EIB loan of €55 million to build a railway tunnel. On Monday 19 May, the European Investment Bank announced that it is lending €55 million to finance the construction of a new 1.8 km twin-track railway tunnel in Ukraine on the Eastern Partnership regional network to improve transport connections between the country and the European Union. The tunnel will be in the Carpathian Mountains at Beskyd in south-west Ukraine, and replace the existing single-track tunnel, which is the only single track section of the line on the otherwise twin-track electrified corridor between Lviv and the Hungarian and Slovak borders. More than half of freight between Ukraine and Central and Eastern Europe goes through the existing tunnel, a serious bottleneck. The EIB is planning to lend Ukraine some €3 billion between 2014 and 2016. (CG)
