Brussels, 16/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - 17 May will be the international day against homophobia and in support of LGTBI (lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and inter-sex) day, when High Representative Catherine Ashton will take the opportunity to reiterate the EU's commitment to the principles of equality and non-discrimination. “Homophobia, biphobia and transphobia are an unacceptable violation of human rights”, Ashton stresses in a press release. Guy Verhofstadt, the leader of the Liberals, also reacted in a statement. “The European Union is based on the universal principles of human rights and must act to fight homophobia and transphobia everywhere in the world. But we must also keep an eye on what is happening here and admit that the situation is still not satisfactory”, said the Belgian leader, calling on the EU to move “from words to actions”. The next President of the European Commission must “act concretely on two additional points: an EU roadmap against homophobia and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and extended EU legislation against hate crime”.
