Brussels, 30/04/2014 (Agence Europe) - Annual inflation in the eurozone rose in April to 0.7% from 0.5% in March, according to a flash estimate released by the EU's statistical office, Eurostat, on Wednesday 30 April. Services are expected to show the highest annual rise (1.6% in April, compared with 1.1% in March), followed by food, drink and tobacco (0.7% in April, compared with 1% in March), non-energy industrial goods (0.1%, compared with 0.2% in March) and energy (-1.2%, compared with -2.1% in March). Annual inflation is well below the ECB target of just below 2%, but the upward trend will reduce the likelihood of intervention by the ECB, whose Governing Council will be meeting in Frankfurt on Thursday 8 May. ECB head Mario Draghi predicted at the beginning of April that inflation would rise over the Easter period, which is later this year, due to greater consumption of services (see EUROPE 11053). (EL)
