Brussels, 28/04/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 25 April, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle and Georgia's President Giorgi Margvelashvili agreed that “signing the association agreement, including the deep and comprehensive free trade area in June, is a top priority”. A meeting will take place in May between European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and the main commissioners and Georgian ministers in relation to this agreement. Füle and Margvelashvili discussed the way to ensure that the benefits of the association agreement are felt by Georgian citizens “as soon as possible”.
During their meeting, Füle reminded the president that it was “very important” that the Georgian government continues to “deliver consistently on political reforms and focuses also on the need to strengthen the democratic institutions and respect for the role of the opposition”. He also wanted Georgia to adopt the anti-discrimination legislation quickly which is currently being debated in the parliament, so as to make progress on the liberalisation of visas. (CG)
