Brussels, 22/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 22 January, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton strongly condemned the bomb attack that same day which targeted the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The car bomb, for which responsibility was claimed by the Front el-Nosra in Lebanon, caused at least 4 fatalities and wounded 35. This is the sixth bomb attack in a Hezbollah stronghold since July last year. “There can be no impunity for such senseless acts of terrorism. They must be swiftly investigated and those responsible must be held to account”, Ashton's spokesman states in a press release.
The spokesman underlined Ashton's support for the efforts promoting moderation and dialogue between Lebanese political forces and said that “disengagement and dissociation from the Syrian conflict need to continue to be among the key aims of these efforts”.
The EU will continue to support the strengthening of Lebanon's institutions and the stability and security of the country, the spokesman added. (CG/transl.jl)
