On 12 January, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton condemned the shooting of Libya's deputy minister for industry, Hassan al-Drowi, the previous day while he was visiting his hometown of Sirte. “There is no justification for such acts of terror”, she stated. Ashton expressed the EU's solidarity with the Libyan people and its desire for peace and stability, and she reiterated the EU's support for the transition to a democratic society based on the rule of law.
