Brussels, 28/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - The fisheries committee of the European Parliament approved, on Wednesday 27 November, two key texts on reform of the common fisheries policy (CFP): - the basic regulation reforming the CFP - report by Ulrike Rodust (S&D, Germany) adopted by 21 votes to one and no abstentions; - and the report by Struan Stevenson (ECR, UK) on common market organisation (CMO) in the fish products and aquaculture sector (adopted with 22 in favour, 2 against and one abstention). The plenary vote will be held mid-December.
MEPs approved the texts arising from political agreements between the institutions (see EUROPE 10945). An amendment by the S&D Group on the CFP report was rejected by the fisheries committee. It called for mention to be made on sales labels of the date when fish were caught or aquaculture products harvested. The regulation, as negotiated, already provides for labelling showing: - the commercial name of the species and its scientific name; - the method of production (fished, fished in freshwater, or farmed); - the area where the product was caught or farmed and the category of fishing gear used for the catch; - whether the product has been de-frosted; - and the date of minimum durability.
