SOCIAL AFFAIRS - EDUCATION / (ae) social

19/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - Employment committee partly agrees to ESF compromise. On Monday 18 November, MEPs from the European Parliament's employment and social affairs committee (EMPL) adopted the compromise reached at the end of the inter-institutional negotiations on the European Social Fund (ESF). They did not, however, adopt a decision on the extremely difficult problem of what the minimum share of the cohesion policy envelope should be earmarked for it (2014-2020). On Wednesday 20 November, Parliament will give its decision on the entirety of the compromise during the Strasbourg plenary session. Currently, the position of the political groups and national delegations appears to have been built on shifting sands, even though the opposition to the compromise, which is seeking 25% instead of 23.1% (see EUROPE 10964), appears to be flagging.
