€40 million for EU research on resource efficiency

Brussels, 01/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 31 October, the European Commission approved EU funding of €40 million for 14 research and development (R&D) projects. The projects cover a wide range of activities from the recycling of waste from manufactured products to the production of fertilisers from animal waste, and include the recycling of discarded motor vehicle tyres and the recycling of batteries. The projects will involve 140 partners from research organisations and private companies.

The projects will kick-off in Brussels next week (5-6 November), when the European Commission is to meet project coordinators to set priorities and coordinate the work ahead.

Contributions will be made from the EU budget to: ANAGENNISI - innovative re-use of all tyre components in concrete applications: €3.12 million; APSE - the use of eco-friendly materials for a new concept of asphalt pavements for a sustainable environment: €2.45 million; COLABATS - cobalt and lanthanide recovery from batteries: €3.59 million; ELICiT - environmentally low impact cooling technology: €2.12 million; ILLUMINATE - automated sorting and recycling of waste lamps: €1.77 million; ManureEcoMine - green fertiliser upcycling from manure: technological, economic and environmental sustainability demonstration: €3.80 million.

Also: PILOT-ABP: €1.79 million; PlasCarb: €3.78 million; Recycal: €2.40 million; REEcover: €6 million; ReFraSort - innovative separation technologies for high grade recycling of refractory waste using non-destructive technologies: €1.75 million; ResCoM - resource conservative manufacturing: €4.37 million; ShredderSort - selective recovery of non-ferrous metal automotive shredder by combined electromagnetic tensor spectroscopy and laser-induced plasma spectroscopy: €3.38 million; and SIKELOR - Silicon Kerf loss recycling: €1.40 million.
