Brussels, 12/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 September, the EPP, S&D, ALDE and ECR Groups at the European Parliament all put forward the name of the young Pakistani girl, Malala Yousafzai, as nominee for the Sakharov Prize 2013.
Yousafzai, a young Pakistani student, was seriously wounded in the head and neck during an assassination attempt by armed Taliban as she returned home after school on the school bus in October 2012. Since the assassination attempt and medical treatment in the United Kingdom, she has attracted the whole world's attention to her fight to gain access to education for girls.
Two EP Groups, Greens/EFA and GUE/NGL, nominated Edward Snowden (see EUROPE 10919). The winner of the Sakharov Prize will be named on 10 October by the conference of presidents of political groups at the EP. (CG/transl.jl)
