Brussels, 29/08/2013 (Agence Europe) - As a token of appeasement in the face of pressure and criticism from the EU, the Hungarian government has decided to modify a planned amendment to its constitution.
The modifications eliminate the possibility that court cases could be relocated from one court to another, as well as the possibility of levying additional taxes should the European Court of Justice impose a fine on Hungary. The modifications also concern the way the Church and religious communities function.
“The government wants to put an end to the [practice that] constitutional matters may serve as a pretext to launching attacks against Hungary”, said Robert Repassy, the Hungarian secretary of state for justice, on Thursday 29 August, reported by the Dow Jones agency. He added that the Hungarian government, whose opinion on the constitution has not changed, considered these modifications to the fundamental law as the result of external “pressure”. (MB/transl.fl)
