21/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - Barroso welcomes Aliyev's commitment to the Southern Gas Corridor. Energy was the focus of the meeting between President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and Azerbaijan's President Aliyev in Brussels on 21 June. Their meeting came on the eve of next week's choice by the Shah Deniz II consortium on the infrastructure that will transport Azeri gas to the European market - a choice between the Nabucco pipeline and the Trans-Adriatic pipeline. “We want to build on this [our partnership in the energy field], moving to a long-term association grounded in democracy and shared values, in particular human rights and fundamental freedoms”, Barroso said, speaking of an “open” discussion with Aliyev on this sensitive issue for Baku.
