Ashton says elections are a victory for democratic life

Brussels, 13/05/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 13 May, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton congratulated the “people of Pakistan” on the general election of 11 May. The election “marks a historic victory for the democratic life” of the country, Ashton said, stressing that “despite an extremely difficult security environment and threats from extremists”, the voters turned out in unprecedented numbers with many Pakistani citizens voting for the first time. “All the main stakeholders, in particular the political parties and state institutions, acted in a responsible manner, demonstrating their support for democracy and the holding of the elections”, she added.

Ashton also hailed the progress of the Pakistani authorities in their efforts to hold the elections in line with national and international commitments, “notably through new constitutional provisions for the election commission of Pakistan and the caretaker government, as well as a significantly improved electoral roll”.

Taking note of the statement of preliminary findings and conclusions of the EU election observation mission, “including the need for continued improvement in the electoral process, in particular the consolidation and strengthening of the electoral framework”, Ashton also stressed the need for a further increase in the level of women's participation in the overall political system. She welcomed the “valuable contributions” made by civil society domestic observers, including the European mission: “The EU is a close partner to Pakistan. I look forward to continuing our strong partnership in support of Pakistan's democratic, economic and social development”, she added.

The Muslim League (PML-N) - the party of the former Pakistani prime minister, Nawaz Sharif - came in first, ahead of the Movement for Justice (PTI) and the Pakistan People's Party, which led the coalition for last five years. The turnout was estimated at 60% - the highest level since 1977 - despite the threats. Over the last month, more than 150 people were killed in violence linked to the elections. (CG/transl.fl)
