04/04/2013 (Agence Europe) - Death sentences. On 4 April, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said she regretted the execution of three men in Kuwait on 1 April. The men had been sentenced to death for murder and their execution took place after a period of six years during which no execution had taken place in the country. Ashton urged Kuwait to return to its previous policy by establishing a moratorium on the death penalty as a first step towards its abolition, and she reiterated the EU's opposition to capital punishment. Before these executions, the last ones dated back to 2007. There are apparently over 40 people on death row in Kuwait. (CG/transl.fl)
