The outgoing Italian Prime Minister, Mario Monti, has reassured the Commissioner in charge of the euro, Olli Rehn, over Italy's commitment to keep its public deficit below 3% of GDP, despite a recent decree on the payment, in 2013 and 2014, of €40 billion in payment arrears, a European Commission spokesperson has stated, the Italian news agency ANSA reported on Wednesday 3 April.
