Brussels, 13/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) published an urgent information note on 13 March, which analyses cyber-attacks launched over recent months against government organisations and high-profile companies - some of which are active in very sensitive sectors. These targeted cyber-attacks, in the European Union and globally, demonstrate the need for greater awareness and know-how in network information security, ENISA underlines. “In cyberspace, it is difficult to be sure where attacks originate, so the focus should be on preventing and mitigating attacks, regardless of where the attackers are based”, stated the executive director of ENISA, Udo Helmbrecht. ENISA therefore calls on European companies and government organisations to take urgent measures to address cyber-attacks. It highlights several issues, such as the lack of borders, failing security measures and security issues linked to email. ENISA also puts forward several recommendations - for example, focusing more on prevention and looking at more secure communication methods. Stating that cyber-criminals often launch the same type of attack - such as phishing, which is very effective - Helmbrecht believes that more action could be taken to counter these attacks by informing users of traps and by ensuring that better security measures are in place.
