Brussels, 01/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - It comes as no great surprise - at least not according to economic indicators - that the EU and eurozone notched up record unemployment rates during January this year. With 10.8% and 11.9% respectively, these rates of unemployment are “unacceptably high”, according to Commissioner Laszlo Andor (Employment), and are “a tragedy for Europe and they signal how serious is the crisis some eurozone countries are in”. The latest figures published on Friday 1 March by the EU statistical office, Eurostat, note the 0.1% progression in the rate of unemployment not only in the EU but also in the eurozone, compared to December 2012. There are 26.217 million Europeans without work. The highest rates of unemployment are in Greece (27% of the active population and 59.4% of young people, according to November 2012 data) and Spain (26.2% and 55.5%). (JK/transl.jl)
