Van Rompuy for continued reforms

Brussels, 10/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Sunday 9 September, while visiting Sarajevo, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy called on Bosnia-Herzegovina to push forward with its reforms. Van Rompuy urged the Bosnian political representatives to “overcome their differences and build a shared vision for a stable, prosperous and democratic future for their country”. He reminded them that for a “credible application” for Sarajevo to join the European Union by the end of the year, strong political resolve was necessary to “overcome the obstacles and fulfil the European potential of the country”. In Van Rompuy's opinion there is “no viable alternative to EU membership” than to proceed with the reforms, and “there will be no better time than now”. He stressed political and economic reforms as well as bringing the Bosnian constitution into conformity with the judgement of the European Court of Human Rights (Sejdic/Finci judgment) (see EUROPE 10644).
