20/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - Oettinger backs re-industrialisation strategy. Policies governing the drive towards a low-carbon economy must not lose sight of the need to maintain the EU's industrial base, Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger argued in an interview with German daily Handelsblatt of 16 July. The commissioner suggests that a fourth goal be added to the 20-20-20 objectives on energy and climate for 2020: to the 20% savings through energy efficiency, a 20% reduction in carbon emissions and renewable energy to form 20% of the EU's energy mix he would like to see added a 20% contribution by industry to EU gross domestic product (GDP). Noting that the percentage fell from 22% to 18% between 2000 and 2010, Oettinger called for a “re-industrialisation strategy for Europe”. The electricity industry should become a pillar of the European energy sector by becoming more involved in fuelling transport. (EH/transl.rt)
