16/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - In EP, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski proposes Ales Bialiatski for Sakharov Prize. On Monday 16 July, MEP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski (EPP) put forward Belarusian activist and head of the Viasna human rights centre Ales Bialiatski as a candidate for the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize, which will be awarded in December. Highlighting that the Sakharov Prise rewards courage and commitment to freedom, democracy and human rights, Saryusz-Wolski said that Bialiatski had, from the start of his adult life, fought for these universal values of democratic society and that his commitment had cost him his freedom, having suffered imprisonment and persecution at the hands of the authorities of Belarus, Europe's last dictatorship.
