Brussels, 21/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - The earthquake that struck the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna on Sunday, 20 May has drawn sympathy from the European institutions. European Commission President José Manuel Barroso expressed his deep sadness for the victims of the earthquake, which left seven people dead. He also indicated that “the European Commission is in close contact with the Italian civil protection authorities and is ready to provide swiftly any assistance that may be requested”.
European Parliament President Martin Schulz opened the plenary session on Monday 21 May expressing solidarity and compassion following the disaster and for the country now in mourning. Speaking on behalf of the Parliament, he also welcomed the demonstration of national solidarity shown by the Italian people over the past few days.
Over the next ten weeks, the region of Emilia-Romagna may appeal for the European Solidarity Fund. This has already been used to help other regions in Italy struck by natural disasters, such as Veneto, which was hit by the floods in 2010. (MD/transl.fl)
