Brussels, 16/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - European Parliament (EP) President Martin Schulz and Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov agreed on Wednesday 16 May that the Parliament would send medical experts to Ukraine to assess the state of health of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko to “ensure full and independent medical treatment”. “This should be done with the personal agreement of Ms Tymoshenko and in consultation with the Ukrainian side”, Schulz said. The EP will also send an internationally respected figure to monitor Tymoshenko's second trial. This person will have full access to the judges, lawyers and documentation. Schulz described the agreement proposed by the EP and accepted by Azarov as “a real step forward in building mutual trust between the European Union and Ukraine”.
Elsewhere, Cypriot Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis said on Wednesday that, in the discussion on Monday 14 May of a possible boycott by European leaders of the Euro 2012 football tournament in Ukraine, ministers were clear that “it is dangerous to mix politics and sport”. “Where do we start and where do we end?” she asked, stating that she had not been invited to attend the event. She added that, for the moment, no sanctions against Kiev were being planned. (CG/transl.rt)
