Brussels, 14/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - Greece's main political parties (the ones with the most seats in the recent general elections) have not been able to reach agreement on a government of national unity to back implementation of the second bailout package, even at a last ditch meeting convened on Tuesday 15 May by the head of state, Carolos Papoulias. The head of PASOK, the Socialist party, Evangelos Venizelos, said the country was heading for new general elections in a parlous state. Along with the Conservative party, New Democracy, PASOK backs the second austerity package of strings attached to the recent international aid. The date of Sunday 17 June has been suggested for the new general elections, which are likely to amount in effect to a referendum on whether the country should stay in the eurozone. (MB/transl.fl)
