07/05/2012 (Agence Europe) - Euro 2012, prime minister deplores boycott threats. On Monday 7 May the Ukrainian prime minister, Mykola Azarov, described threats by European leaders to boycott the Euro 2012 football cup (due to the situation regarding the former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko) as humiliating. During a meeting with Second World War veterans he said that “they are now talking to us about boycotting Euro 2012. Is this normal?… Do they want to humiliate us? Do they want to humiliate our people and country?” The prime minister pointed out that the state's coffers were empty but the government would ensure that the infrastructure was ready for the sports competition that takes place from 8 June to 1 July 2012. The prime minister added that “Euro 2012 will indeed take place and will be both a festival for our country and our citizens”. (CG/transl.fl)
