Road injuries - public consultation

Brussels, 23/04/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is looking at road injuries, and no longer solely from the point of view of reducing accidents, as has always traditionally been the case. To this end, it is opening a public consultation before drafting a specific strategy on the major health problems of injuries caused by road accidents, as part of its political orientations 2011-2024 for road safety. Given that the road safety results for 2011, published at the end of March, were relatively disappointing (see EUROPE 10585), the Commission opened this consultation on 17 April. This was a precursor to the European strategy to reduce the impact of injuries caused by road accidents, as this also has a major impact on costs borne by society (1,500,000 people injured in 2010). At this stage, the idea is to judge the relevance of the European strategy on the basis of comments received through the public consultation, with a view to defining a common definition of injuries (slight/serious, lapse of time), but also to improve data collection European level. The consultation will run until 22 June. (MD/transl.fl)
