13/04/2012 (Agence Europe) - Sanctions to be suspended rather than lifted? On Friday 13 April 2012, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kuy called for the EU's sanctions on Burma to be suspended, rather than lifted, in order to aid the country's economic reform process. Cameron said it would be good to suspend sanctions against Burma, rather than lifting them, adding that the arms embargo should remain in place. Aung San Suu Kuy said she backed the idea of suspending sanctions rather than lifting them. Cameron said it was important to send a message that people want to support change that can increase freedom, human rights and democracy in Burma. The EU Council of foreign ministers will be deciding on the sanctions question on 23 April. (CG/transl.fl)
