Brussels, 16/03/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, Financial Times Deutschland reported that the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, has suggested that Germany's current finance minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, should replace Jean-Claude Juncker at the helm of Eurogroup. Quoting anonymous sources, the FT listed his strong points - experience and Germany's debt crisis management role (retaining it triple A status). The appointment of a German as the head of the Eurogroup may be opposed by countries worried about Germany taking control of the EU. The director general of the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), the president of the EIB and the head of the European taskforce for Greece are all German. The European summit asked Juncker himself to consider who would be the best people for three top jobs that need to be filled shortly - the head of the Eurogroup, a place on the Executive Board of the ECB and the president of EBRD (see EUROPE 10566).
