Brussels, 28/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - As announced (see EUROPE 10561), the General Affairs Council formally adopted, on Tuesday 28 February, further sanctions against 21 people responsible for the crackdown on civil society and on the opposition, “against the background of the further deterioration of the situation in Belarus”. The individuals concerned, whose names will be published in the EU Official Journal on Wednesday 29 February, will be subject to a travel ban and a freeze of their assets. In total, over 200 people are already subject to a travel ban and assets freeze within the EU. Furthermore, the assets of three companies linked to the regime remain frozen while exports to Belarus of arms and material for internal repression are prohibited. (CG/transl.jl)
