MEP says Tymoshenko has been mistreated

Brussels, 22/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - The former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who has been imprisoned since August and sentenced to 7 years' imprisonment, is suffering from health problems due to the ill treatment meted out to her, the Czech MEP and doctor Zuzana Roithova (EPP), told the press agency CTK on Tuesday 21 February.

The MEP, who has had access to Tymoshenko's medical notes from November, revealed that her analgesic treatment has been halted and that she has had her crutches taken away from her. “Ms Tymoshenko, who suffers from back pain, has been subjected to long interrogation sessions, lasting several hours. She is truly tormented and harassed”, she added. According to Roithova, the problems noted in November on the former prime minister's back required appropriate treatment, in particular bed rest and analgesic treatment. Tymoshenko may also have been “exposed to the effects of toxic substances, for her to give in to pressure from the regime”, said the MEP.

Roithova arrived in Ukraine on Sunday 16 February to write a report for the European Parliament on Tymoshenko's state of health. The Ukrainian authorities prevented her from visiting the former prime minister. (CG/transl.fl)
