Van Rompuy virtually assured of second term

Brussels, 22/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - The Belgian press has reported that Herman Van Rompuy is all but certain of being appointed for a second term of two and half years at the helm of the European Council when EU leaders meet on Thursday 1 March. “There is general consensus around Van Rompuy: no one has spoken against him” and “No other candidates have declared themselves”, two sources told the dailies L'Echo and De Tijd. If re-appointed, former Belgian prime minister Van Rompuy, who has already indicated that he would be happy to continue in the post, would see his area of responsibility extended in that he would also be called on to chair eurozone summits.
