02/02/2012 (Agence Europe) - Port-Said football match, Ashton and Vassiliou respond. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton asserted on Thursday 2 February that she hoped that, “an immediate and independent investigation will shed light on the causes” of the violence that exploded in a Port Said Stadium at the end of a football match between two Egyptian clubs, which resulted in the deaths of more than 70 people. Commissioner for Sport Androulla Vassiliou said that, “as with all sports, football can give rise to intense passions, but the events we have seen at the stadium are completely unacceptable”. She said that she “was deeply saddened and shocked by the terrible scenes”. Both Ashton and Vassiliou offered their condolences to the Egyptian people. (CG/transl.fl)
