Brussels, 19/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations (see EUROPE 10531) was officially launched in Copenhagen on Wednesday 18 January, with a two day conference, “Stay active - what does it take”. In his opening speech, Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion Commissioner Laszlo Andor hailed Denmark as the example to follow. Through the high level of people aged between 55 and 64 in employment (58% compared with the European average of under 50%) and its low level of youth unemployment (14.9%, when the EU average is 22.3%), Denmark is, he said, a “clear example” … “demonstrating that providing proper jobs for older people doesn't take employment opportunities away from youngsters”, the commissioner said. However, “we are now at a critical turning point as the baby-boomers reach retirement age”, he added. It is largely for this reason that the Commission chose the theme for this year, hoping to highlight this demographic and social challenge and to promote good practice among member states. There is no ready-made, universally applicable strategy, Andor warned. “The European Year will only be a success if government at all levels, business, the social partners and the public are ready to get involved”, he said.
