Copenhagen, 11/01/2012 (Agence Europe) - Denmark's Foreign Minister Villy Soevndal stated on Wednesday 11 January that the EU will continue to impose sanctions on the Syrian regime. “The violent repression of the civilian population is unacceptable. We will maintain and extend sanctions until the regime brings an end to the violence against its own people”, he said.
He also drew attention to the role and “remarkable work” of the Arab League. Expressing regret that the United Nations Security Council had not been able, because of the Russian and Chinese vetoes, to pass a joint resolution, he stated that Russia's draft resolution “shows that Moscow recognises that something is happening”.
The latest measures taken by the EU date from 2 December and are directed, inter alia, at the oil and gas sectors. They also contain a number of financial sanctions. (CG/transl.rt)
