Prague prepared to back changes to EU Treaty

Brussels, 07/12/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Czech Republic will back changes to the EU Treaty at the European summit later this week if they cover the eurozone countries and do not lead to fragmentation of the European Union, said Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas on Wednesday 7 December.

In a press release, Necas says that if it is found that the current Treaty has to be changed in order to solve the current situation, then it would make sense and be more transparent to discuss a pertinent change to the EU Treaties. He said the Czech Republic was prepared to play an active, constructive role as long as the treaty change covered the eurozone nations and did not lead to fragmentation within the EU. He warned that any such fragmentation could well damage the functioning of the EU and the common internal market rules.

The Czech Republic joined the EU in 2004, but has not yet joined the euro. Piotr Necas became prime minister in July 2010, and is a staunch supporter of budget discipline. He has stated on several occasions that before the end of the current government (2014), he will set a date for the country to join the euro. (LC/transl.fl)
