Human rights organisations urge EP to defend rights

Brussels, 06/12/2011 (Agence Europe) - The Vietnam Committee for the Defence of Human Rights and Quê Me: Action for Democracy in Vietnam requested in a letter sent to MEPs and published on 5 December that they raise the question of human rights and call for the release of dissidents in Vietnam when they meet the Vietnamese delegation on 5 December. These organisations also urged parliamentarians to ensure that the next cooperation and partnership agreements, currently being negotiated, include a human rights clause, “containing real and effective means for ensuring that fundamental rights are respected” by Hanoi. The Committee pointed out that repression was being exercised in the religious field, against dissidents, lawyers and human rights activists, freedom of expression on the internet and the right to demonstrate.
