Oettinger wants European standards for schist gas

Brussels, 09/09/2011 (Agence Europe) - Poland may dream of breaking free from its dependence on Russian gas thanks to the huge reserves, estimated at 5,300 billion m³, of schist gas within its borders, but other countries are less enthusiastic. France has banned extraction of this non conventional gas because of the dangers it presents for the environment. European Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger wants schist gas extraction in EU member states to comply with common standards. “I think we'll get a high level of acceptance when we all have the same: European Common Standards, a high level of safety and security and quality for environmental interests”, he told press following a meeting of the European People's Party 5EPP) in Wroc³aw on Friday 9 September. “The best way is to Europeanise standard efforts”, he added, promising proposals in the spring of next year.
