29/08/2011 (Agence Europe) - Suicide terrorist attack in Cherchell, Algeria, condemned. On Saturday 27 August, the head of the European diplomatic corps, Catherine Ashton, and European Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Štefan Füle strongly condemned the terrorist attack on the military academy in Cherchell, the previous day. The suicide attack, responsibility for which has been claimed by Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) which reproaches Algiers for its support for the Gaddafi regime, cost the lives of 18 people and injured 26 others. In a press release, Ashton and Füle state that “violence will be defeated and will not succeed in stopping Algeria on its path towards reforms”. “The EU is ready to develop further its cooperation with Algeria to support the reform agenda”, they add.
