26/08/2011 (Agence Europe) - EESC calls for Libya to be helped to introduce a democratic and properly functioning civil society. The regime of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya appears to be on its last legs and the president of the European Economic and Social Committee, Staffan Nilsson, is calling on the international community to focus on how a new Libya can be rebuilt that is free, safe and democratic. He wants Libyan civil society to be involved in the process and in a press release published on Friday 26 August called for employers' associations, trade unions and other groups representing professionals, small business and public interest associations to be encouraged to commit to building democracy in the country.
