29/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - Investigation into restructuring of Royal Mail. On 29 July the European Commission opened an in-depth investigation to ascertain whether UK plans to restructure the postal incumbent Royal Mail are in line with EU state aid rules. The plans provides for state intervention: - €8 billion to fund the deficit of the pension fund accrued by Royal Mail in the period before liberalisation; - €1.9 in the form of debt restructuring; - the provision of a revolving credit facility. The Commission wonders whether the plans provide appropriate measures to limit competition distortions resulting from the state intervention and ensure that Royal Mail makes an adequate contribution to the restructuring costs. Opening an in-depth investigation in no way prejudges the outcome of the investigation. (F.G./transl.rt)
