Brussels, 29/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - The municipality of Vaals, in the south of the Netherlands, has stated in recent days that it wishes to ban European citizens from the new member states who find themselves without employment from settling on its territory, as of September this year. The reason for this is that the town no longer wishes to subsidise foreign nationals, some media report. Quizzed on the matter on Friday 29 July, the spokesman for Commissioner Viviane Reding, Matthew Newman, pointed out how important it is to comply with the provisions of the 2004 directive on the free movement of European citizens, saying that the Commission and the Dutch authorities were currently holding regular meetings on the subject. This spring, Reding had warned the Dutch authorities about preparing a draft law aimed at expelling Polish, Romanian or Bulgarian citizens without accommodation or work from its territory.
