Key points in Monday's Council

Brussels, 15/07/2011 (Agence Europe) - The next multiannual financial framework (2014-2020), reform of the statute of the European Court of Justice and presentation of the objectives of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers: these are the three main issues for the General Affairs Council in Brussels on Monday 18 July. Budget and Financial Programming Commissioner Janusz Lewandowski will present the financial framework. The Polish Presidency is not anticipating any discussion on this issue, expecting rather “preparation for the exchanges, which we hope will be much more considered, at the informal Council in Sopot in Poland on 28-29 July”, said Ambassador Jan Tombiñski, Poland's permanent representative to the EU, at a conference on Friday 15 July. The second point is the statute of the Court of Justice and the proposals for reform by its President Vassilios Skouris. To respond to growing demand and to shorten the length of procedures, Skouris proposes to increase the number of judges, from 27 to 29, and to “make the internal structure of the various chambers more flexible so that issues can be more swiftly considered”, Tombiñski said.
