08/06/2011 (Agence Europe) - D'Alema's recipes for success. The Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) is to launch a “call to Europe”, a conference which will take place in Brussels on 29-30 June, FEPS President and former Italian Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema announced on Tuesday 7 June. According to D'Alema, progressive governments, now very rare in the EU, can find fresh drive in Europeanist positions. He believes that the response to the dip in the popularity of European integration “is not less Europe but more Europe”. His recipes for success include a single president for the European Commission and the European Council, more attention to be paid to social issues and, above all, more policy and less diplomacy. He notes that there is “no shortage of rules, but these rules are not being observed” and he proposes an institutional link between Europe and the Southern Mediterranean, following the Arab spring.
