Slim progress on food labelling

Brussels, 25/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - Law-makers made little progress at their second trialogue meeting (European Commission, European Parliament and EU Council of Ministers) during the night of Tuesday to Wednesday on the draft EU regulation on consumer information about food (see EUROPE 10362).

Slight progress was made on the visibility of labelling and imitation food, two technical issues, but there is still total deadlock over key policy matters like animals whose throats have been cut, transfats, countries of origin and alcoholic drinks. The negotiators will meet again on 14 June. Time is running out because in order to avoid the conciliation process, agreement will have to be reached by 4 July (date of the European Parliament plenary). (A.N./transl.fl)
