10/05/2011 (Agence Europe) - The European History Book prize was awarded this year to Jacques Frémeaux for his work entitled: “De quoi fut fait l'Empire, les guerres coloniales au XIXième siècle”. The prize was awarded at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on the occasion of Europe Day, Monday 9 May. The chairperson of the EP committee on education and culture, Doris Pack, congratulated the winner saying that the European Union's current action in the world, which is pacific and respectful of human rights and peoples, cannot do without a “lucid analysis of our sombre colonial past”. Created by the French association of historians for the promotion and distribution of historical knowledge, the prize is sponsored by the French ministry of higher education and research and the state secretary in charge of European affairs, as well as the general secretary of the Council of Europe. The prizewinner will receive a free translation of his work into German and English. (I.L./transl.jl)
