14/04/2011 (Agence Europe) - China is to be congratulated for wishing to reduce its aviation sector emissions. European Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard hailed the announcement made on Thursday 14 April by the Chinese authorities of measures to cut emissions from its aviation sector. She said that, although all the details were not yet known, this could be a step in the right direction. It was, at any rate, an indication of the growing attention that the (long-neglected) contribution of aviation to climate change was receiving throughout the world, she added. She put this development down to the pioneering role played by the EU in including civil aviation emissions in the ETS (emissions trading scheme) from 2012. (A.N./transl.rt)
